British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," he said. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
