Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing these drugs must be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you become starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
