Senate Greenlights Measure to Release Epstein Records

The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday quickly approved to legislation that will force the release of official records associated with the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a near-unanimous vote in the lower house and a change of position by the president and his Republican allies. Trump's team gave in after an extended period of trying to block the joint action involving a controversy that has followed the president since his return to the White House.

Expedited Passage in Congress

The Senate acted by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a individual voting process, accelerating the process. Just before, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

Citizens have been patient long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have suffered long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader declared in a floor speech on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Uncover the facts. Ensure full disclosure.”

Next Steps

This legislation next goes to Trump for his signature. Trump stated on Monday that he would approve the bill.

Although Trump has for an extended period dismissed the controversy over the authorities' approach of the scandal as a “false narrative”, he signalled his support for the House bill over the weekend, and said he would approve it if it reaches his desk.

Support and Opposition

Democrats, along with those affected and their supporters who were watching from a public section, applauded after the bill was approved. Lone dissent came from a Louisiana Republican, who expressed concern he feared the measure would reveal identifying details of people, potential suspects and others caught up in the investigation.
